Applications now open for Inspiring and Innovating Science Awards 2019

Awards organized by Nature Research and The Estée Lauder Companies support the achievements of women in science and initiatives promoting STEM* subjects to girls and young women

London | New York, 7 March 2019

Leading women scientists and promoters of science to girls and young women are encouraged to apply for this year’s Inspiring Science and Innovating Science Awards. The two annual awards are administered by Nature Research in partnership with The Estée Lauder Companies, and underline the commitment of both organizations to promote gender equity in scientific research and education. Applications can be made via an online application form between 5 March and 6 May. Winners will be announced in October 2019.

The Inspiring Science Award is an award for early-career female researchers or academics. Successful candidates have made an exceptional contribution to scientific discovery, and demonstrate considerable effort to inspire the next generation of girls and young women in science.

Candidates for the Innovating Science Award are individuals or groups who have set up or run a grassroots initiative that supports girls and young women to study, engage with and enjoy science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Award winners each receive a monetary grant of US$20,000 to spend on initiatives relating to their work, as well as additional funding for publication, or event funding, access to online Nature Masterclasses, mentoring through The Estée Lauder Companies and other publicity opportunities.

Winners will be selected by independent judging panels consisting of academic scientists, external experts, as well as staff from Nature Research and The Estée Lauder Companies. A shortlist will be announced in September and the winners will be announced in October 2019 and presented with the awards at a specially dedicated ceremony.

Magdalena Skipper, Editor-in-Chief of Nature and judging panel member, said: “It gives us great pleasure to announce that we are accepting applications for the second round of these awards. Last year we were overwhelmed with truly outstanding applications, and the initiatives pioneered by our 2018 winners showcase some of the excellent work being done around the world to encourage girls and young women to take up and excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In this year’s applications, we look forward to learning about and rewarding more initiatives and work from inspiring individuals and organizations across the world.”

Lisa Napolione, Senior Vice President, Global Research & Development at The Estée Lauder Companies and judging panel member, said: “We are honored to have partnered with Nature Research for the second year, an organization that shares our values focusing on exceptional science and extraordinary scientists. Last year’s applicants were gleaming examples of the commitment to making an indelible difference for so many others. This year, we are looking forward to continuing to help shine a well-deserved light on the exceptional research achievements of women in STEM.”

* STEM includes natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, engineering and medicine.
