A_zbMATH © springerThe editors and partners of zbMATH – FIZ Karlsruhe, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the European Mathematical Society and the STM publisher Springer – have appointed Klaus Hulek as the new editor-in-chief. zbMATH (formerly Zentralblatt für Mathematik) is the world’s most comprehensive and longest-running abstracting and reviewing service in pure and applied mathematics.

Professor Hulek succeeds Gert-Martin Greuel who led zbMATH from 2012 to 2015. With a range of new features and functionalities added under his supervision, among them extensive citation data, author profiles and the unique software information service swMATH, Professor Greuel significantly contributed to turning zbMATH into a modern online database.

As a result of his years spent as Vice President for Research at Leibniz University in Hannover, Germany, Professor Hulek has broad experience in science policy. He is familiar in particular with the European scientific community from his former work as a representative of the German Rectors’ Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz) in the Research Policy Working Group of the European University Association.

Klaus Hulek said, “Online searches are essential for mathematical research, and I am convinced that the digital development offers excellent opportunities for the further enhancement of zbMATH. For example, we would like to expand the author identification feature and the reference of citations. zbMATH already has significant advantages compared to other databases, such as the unique referencing tool for the mathematical software swMATH. In the future, we would also like to explore the connection with research data and the growing importance of non-printed media.”

As an online database, zbMATH (Zentralblatt MATH) offers a wide variety of services that go far beyond the original concept of a journal, networking the mathematics research community across the globe. The database covers almost the entire mathematics literature, making it the leading publication medium in the discipline. First published as a journal in 1931 by Springer, it came to be regarded as the most comprehensive and longest-running reviewing service for mathematics.
