Springer Nature joins SDG Publishers Compact

The Compact aims to accelerate progress to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Springer Nature has built on its existing commitment to accelerate delivery of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by joining with other publishers in signing up to the recently launched SDG Publishers Compact.

Through journals such as Nature Sustainability and Nature Climate Change, books series including the Sustainable Development Goals Encyclopedia and dedicated SDG content hubs (for example recently launched hubs for SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities and SDG14: Life Below Water), Springer Nature is a global leader in publishing research and analysis of critical importance both to our understanding of global challenges, and to identifying and refining solutions. In addition, Springer Nature makes important connections between researchers, policymakers and practitioners by providing topical information and commentary, through Policy Briefs, partnerships with organisations including the WHO and UNESCO, and events such as Science for a Sustainable Future – co-hosted with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network in October 2020 – and the ongoing Science on the Hill series held in Washington DC.

By joining the SDG Publishers Compact, Springer Nature is delighted to be part of a cross-publisher initiative to contribute to the UN’s Decade of Action.”

Michiel Kolman, Chair of the International Publishers Association’s Inclusive Publishing and Literacy Committee said: “The SDG Publishers Compact has attracted great interest from publishers of all shapes and sizes around the world and it is great to see Springer Nature among the first signatories. They already publish so much that promotes the SDGs and here they demonstrate their commitment to being a sustainable business. We are looking forward to working with Springer Nature and sharing best practices among all those who have signed up.”

Nicola Jones, Head of SDG Publishing at Springer Nature, commented: “Since launching our SDG Publishing Programme we have made new connections between multidisciplinary portfolios, and identified new partnerships to make stronger links between research and policy in support of the Global Goals. Our internal network of 68 SDG Champions have enabled us to do this effectively, to build on insights and speed-up progress.”

The SDG Publishers Compact is a voluntary commitment that recognizes the responsibility of the publishing industry to create a sustainable future through action. Signatories aspire to develop sustainable practices and act as champions of the SDGs during the Decade of Action (2020-2030), publishing books and journals that will help inform, develop and inspire action in that direction. This compact follows other compacts for the Media sector and businesses in general.
