8 February 2021 | Tokyo (Updated 7 April 2021)
Springer Nature Group in Japan has started to accept applications for the Julius Springer scholarship to provide €12,500 each to two Japanese university students, who are in financial need to pay for their education such as entrance fees, learning material and tuition fees at their universities. The scholarship is designed to enable undergraduate and postgraduate students who are experiencing hardship, for example due to the coronavirus pandemic or other reasons, to pursue their studies and continue research at their university.
This Julius Springer Scholarship is funded by the Julius Springer Charitable Fund, a charity affiliated with Springer Nature. The fund provides financial support for people in need in Germany and, each year, in another country where Springer Nature operates. This year, Japan will receive support from the fund and has established the Julius Springer Scholarship for university students.
From February 5, 2021 to May 10, 2021, university students in Japan who are experiencing financial hardship are invited to apply for the Julius Springer scholarship by submitting an essay (in Japanese) on their study or research that they would like to continue at their university. Applicants are also asked to provide official evidence of their financial hardship. Applications will be initially reviewed by a committee made up of colleagues from Springer Nature in Japan. All applicants will be notified of the results by May 31, 2021. A shortlisted group will then be invited to an online interview during early June 2021. The results will be announced during June 2021 and successful applicants will receive a notice to receive the funding during July 2021. For further details on eligibility and the application procedure, please see here.
Antoine Bocquet, Managing Director of Springer Nature in Japan, said: “Springer Nature aims to contribute to the research and education communities it works with throughout the world. The Julius Springer Fund provides active financial support for people in need and each year provides grants in a different country. This year we are delighted that this fund will be directed to support the education of university students and to cultivate the next generation of researchers in Japan.”
In addition, in 2012, grants were awarded to high-school students from areas hit by the 2011 disaster in the Tohoku district to attend university.
Call for applications of this scholarship will take place in cooperation with the Cheiron Initiative and the Research University Consortium 33 (RU33).
Details of the scholarship application procedure is available here.
