Nature Portfolio to expand with three new journals in 2023

Nature Mental Health, Nature Water and Nature Reviews Bioengineering will be added to the Nature Portfolio in January 2023

London | New York | Berlin, 18 March 2022

Three new Nature journals are to launch in 2023 as publisher Springer Nature continues to reflect the needs of research communities through its Nature portfolio. With the first issues due in January 2023, Nature Mental Health, Nature Water and Nature Reviews Bioengineering will have multi-disciplinary scopes and offer a new avenue for publication of the latest research discoveries that are impacting some of the challenges the world is facing.

Like all Nature-branded journals, the new launches will be overseen by a team of professional editors who oversee the careful selection, commissioning, fair and rigorous peer-review, accurate editing, rapid publication and broad dissemination of primary research and/or commissioned content.

Nature Mental Health and Nature Water, as part of Springer Nature’s ongoing commitment towards open access and the drive for open science, will be launching as transformative journals, committed to fully transitioning to OA.

Nature Mental Health is a thematic journal covering the breadth of sciences using rigorous methodology to understand mental health and mental health disorders. The journal, led by Rebecca Cooney as Chief Editor, forms part of the Nature imprints applied sciences group expansion to meet the needs of clinical, psychiatric, psychological and public health authors and researchers. Taking an expansive view of the relevant fields, Nature Mental Health is poised to become the nexus for high-quality, high-impact multidisciplinary research on mental health and mental health disorders.

Nature Water, led by Fabio Pulizzi as Chief Editor, is a journal covering all aspects of research related to the evolving relationship between water resources and society. The journal will support academics and practitioners in the water sector by publishing a wide range of topics, including fundamental aspects of water resources, technological innovations, water management and behavioural aspects, with a strong interest in promoting interdisciplinary studies.

Nature Reviews Bioengineering, the first engineering Nature Reviews journal, is an online-only journal publishing reviews, perspectives and comments covering the full breadth of bioengineering, focusing on application, translation and technology.

“Bioengineering is a rapidly evolving, cross-disciplinary field that involves engineering, biology, medicine, chemistry, physics, nanotechnology and computer science. We aim to bring together scientists and engineers interested in the design of materials, tools, methods, technologies or devices to mimic, modify or control biology, to understand biological mechanisms, combat disease or address environmental issues,” explains Christine-Maria Horejs, Chief Editor, Nature Reviews Bioengineering.

Speaking on the new launches, Ruth Wilson, Publishing Director, Nature Journals said: “We are delighted to be launching three new journals in Nature Mental Health, Nature Water and Nature Reviews Bioengineering. Through these journals we aim to amplify diverse voices, provide a platform for discussion, debate and solution, and publish pieces that discuss ethical, societal and industrial aspects of research.

Nature Mental Health is important in increasing the number of outlets in which researchers are able to share and access content on issues of huge importance to every one of us, and allows us to continue to champion the benefits that scientific advances bring in this area. Through Nature Water we want to further cement our commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as we aim to connect researchers who are tackling the world’s toughest challenges with the practitioners who can benefit from their insight.”

On the launch of the first Nature Reviews engineering journal, Wilson added: “The bioengineering field has become a key enabler of medical breakthroughs, new biological insights, and sustainability concepts, reflected in many high-impact publications. However, this community does not yet have a dedicated Reviews journal. The timing is, therefore, ideal for the launch of Nature Reviews Bioengineering.

All three journals are now open for submissions.
