Springer Nature responds to community feedback with its new journal series Nature Progress
Supported by Nature Portfolio’s in-house editorial expertise, Nature Progress journals will expand access to high impact publishing to more researchers.
London | New York | Berlin, 12 February 2026
Springer Nature today announced the launch of Nature Progress, a new Nature-branded journal series within the Nature Portfolio. With 84% of surveyed authors welcoming more opportunities to publish in Nature-branded titles – the new journal initiative underscores the publisher’s commitment to expanding author choice and meeting researchers’ needs. The journals in the series will be published open access (OA).
Authors publishing in the new series will benefit from the expertise of specialist in-house Nature Portfolio editors, combined with the deep community expertise of external editorial board members. This collaborative approach ensures rigorous standards while reflecting the diversity of global research.
Deborah Sweet, Executive Vice President for the Nature Portfolio said:
“Nature Portfolio is a trusted cornerstone for the global research community, championing scientific progress and supporting researchers worldwide. We have always evolved in line with community needs – whether enabling greater collaboration and visibility around the research process via transparent peer review, delivering sustainable OA options for highly selective titles, or expanding access through OA funding initiatives. The Nature Progress series represents the next step in this ongoing commitment to serving our community.”
Deborah Sweet added:
“With this new Nature-branded series, our aim is to broaden opportunities for researchers by combining the benefits of OA publication with the high engagement that publishing in a Nature-branded title can bring. Across Springer Nature, we remain committed to working with our community to ensure that regardless of discipline or location, we can offer researchers a trusted home for their work.”
The Nature Progress series will launch with two journals in the biomedical space, supporting the rapid dissemination of rigorously evaluated advances within the field. These titles will complement Springer Nature’s existing portfolio of around 700 full OA journals and build on the more than 240,000 OA articles published each year by Springer Nature. As full OA titles, they will be supported by the publisher’s APC waiver policy.
For over 20 years, Springer Nature has responded to the needs of authors and funders by taking an active role in the OA transition. Working closely with authors, funders and institutions, the publisher has developed, and scaled, new sustainable routes to OA publishing. Springer Nature continues to invest in technology and partnerships to power the continued transition to OA, ensuring it remains an accessible option for all, whilst maintaining the high standards authors expect from its trusted brands.
Nature Progress Oncology and Nature Progress Brain Health will open for submissions from 19th March 2026. More about the series is available here.
