Springer Nature and CAPES extend transformative agreement
Three-year agreement supports researchers at participating institutions and publishes research from all Brazilian states
New York | Brasilia, 28 October 2026
Springer Nature and the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) have broadened their Transformative Agreement (TA) for Brazil, advancing their shared commitment to open access (OA) by extending publishing opportunities across an expanded portfolio of journals, including Nature Portfolio titles. Researchers from eligible institutions participating in the Portal de Periódicos da CAPES will be able to publish OA in participating Nature titles, strengthening the global reach of Brazilian research.
This extension builds upon the successful 2026 TA between Springer Nature and CAPES which launched in January. Through this agreement, researchers from more than 435 eligible institutions across Brazil were able to read and publish in more than 1,800 Springer Nature journals. More than 4,000 open access articles have been published in the first six months, spanning more than 16 research disciplines, allowing researchers from all the states of Brazil to benefit from enhanced global visibility.
Maria Lopes, Springer Nature’s Vice President of Institutional Sales for the Americas, said: “We are proud to continue our relationship with CAPES. The response from the Brazilian research community demonstrates the value of increasing the opportunities to publish openly. We look forward to continuing to help researchers share their findings across disciplines.”
Antonio Gomes Souza Filho, Vice President of CAPES, added: “The Read and Publish agreement with Springer Nature had been highly anticipated by the academic community since the signing of the letter of intent in December 2023. Expanding the agreement to include Nature journals demonstrates that we are on the right track.”
