Springer Nature acquires British Journal of Cancer

The academic publisher acquires full ownership of BJC enhancing its international growth and development

London |  May 13, 2021

Springer Nature has today acquired full ownership of the prestigious British Journal of Cancer (BJC).

Launched in 1947 (1) as a general oncology journal, BJC publishes across the full spectrum of cancer research, covering molecular cell biology, genetics, translational research, clinical studies and epidemiology. Since the 1980s it has been published in partnership with Springer Nature (2).

Along with its nearly 75 years of heritage and association with CRUK, the acquisition of BJC to full ownership by Springer Nature marks an important step in the journal’s development and growth. Now as part of the wider Springer Nature oncology portfolio and medical titles, the journal will benefit from enhanced international reach, author services and international collaboration, further cementing its status as a key journal for the cancer community.

Speaking of the acquisition Alison Mitchell, Chief Journals Officer, Springer Nature,

“The research published in the British Journal of Cancer provides the medical community with a vital global platform for key discussions, engagement and development in the field of oncology. Springer Nature has and continues to develop a strong programme of journals representing leading researchers, practitioners and societies in medicine. We have had a strong partnership with CRUK for many years and this move to full ownership for Springer Nature gives us an opportunity to build on BJC's strong reputation and engagement within the community, and to grow and develop the journal to continue to meet the needs of its authors and readers.”

As part of this acquisition, the strong relationship between CRUK and Springer Nature will still continue. The CRUK name will still be used in relation to the journal, and the journal will continue to be published with a by-line indicating this affiliation. BJC remains a key journal for CRUK’s outreach to its research community.

The journal homepage and additional information regarding submission and outreach can be found here.
