London, 11 May 2018

Springer Nature has published its 500th open access (OA) book, marking a major milestone in its book portfolio since the launch of its dedicated OA book publication programme in 2012.

The 500th OA title to be published is Teaching Tolerance in a Globalized World (IEA Research for Education series) by Sandoval-Hernández, Isac & Miranda.

Through its renowned book imprints Springer, Palgrave Macmillan, Apress and J.B. Metzler, Springer Nature publishes a wide range of books in science, technology and medicine as well as the humanities and social sciences.

On average, OA books published by Springer Nature receive just under 30,000 chapter downloads within the first year of publication, as well as increased access and readership.

Key performers in the OA book portfolio include:

_Most chapter downloads: [1.7 million] Autonomes Fahren (SpringerOpen, 2015) Editors: Maurer, M., Gerdes, J.C., Lenz, B., Winner, H. (Hrsg.) funded by the Daimler and Benz Foundation. Subject area:  Automotive engineering

_Most citations: [255] High Density Lipoproteins (SpringerOpen, 2015) Editors: von Eckardstein, Arnold, Kardassis, Dimitris funded by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). Subject area: Pharmacology/toxicology

_Most online mentions: [810] Safer Healthcare (SpringerOpen, 2016) Authors: Vincent, Charles, Amalberti, René, funded by the Health Foundation. Subject area: Health administration

Tim Britton, Managing Director of Open Research at Springer Nature, says: “We are delighted to have reached this milestone in our OA books collection. Springer Nature helped to pioneer OA book publishing by first piloting open access publication for books back in 2011. Open research is important to us at Springer Nature and making information and ideas accessible through publishing robust and insightful research is at the core of our mission to advance discovery.  We are really proud of the role that our OA books programme plays in this.”

Springer Nature publishes both OA and hybrid books and series, and partners with, amongst others, IEA (The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement), IMISCOE (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion), Max Planck, and Simula Research Laboratory.
