Springer Nature provides eBook access worth €750,000 in response to University of Cape Town fire relief efforts
Global publisher aims to support researchers and students with return to teaching and learning
Cape Town 21st May 2021
As the University of Cape Town (UCT) is seeking ways to return to full academic activity following the terrible impact of the Table Mountain fire, Springer Nature has provided free access to Springer eBooks, valued at more than 750,000 Euros (13M ZAR approx.) with immediate effect, to enable researchers and students to more easily return to teaching and learning.
Access will be provided to all 21 Springer eBook collections, which will grant teachers, students and researchers a full access of four Copyright Years, 2018 - 2021, until December 2022 to more than 46,000 covering all subject areas.
Asdaa Kotani, VP Institutional Sales and Marketing for Springer Nature, Eastern Europe Middle East and Africa, said: “Today, Springer Nature is pleased to give immediate access to more than 46,000 eBooks to the University of Cape Town as they continue to recover from the devastating Table Mountain fire that affected many of the campus buildings including the historic library. While no donation can compensate for the losses of the University and local community, we hope that providing access to content will support UCT in its prioritised efforts to restart research activities and contribute to a swift and complete resumption of teaching, learning and research at UCT.”
Ujala Satgoor, Executive Director, University of Cape Town, said: “Springer Nature’s donation of immediate access to Springer eBooks is extremely generous and a fine example of support we have received towards the UCT Fire Relief. This donation will help us continue to provide our students and researchers access to the latest scientific, technological and medical information. As we deal with the loss of collections, facilities, and financial resources, we are extremely appreciative and inspired by Springer Nature's incredibly generous gift.”
