Springer Nature announces transformational agreement with Qatar National Library

Doha, 27 May 2019

Springer Nature and Qatar National Library have announced a three-year agreement that combines reading access and open access (OA) publishing in a single arrangement.

The Library is leading the first consortium in the Middle East to implement such an agreement, which has enabled researchers to access a variety of journals and publishing opportunities. Researchers from participating consortium institutions have been able to access over 2,250 journals from Springer Nature imprints and have the chance to publish their research through open access in more than 1,850 Springer hybrid journals for free, allowing for a wider reach of current research findings and a greater benefit for both science and society.

“Springer Nature is committed to open access, and we are delighted to be partnering with Qatar National Library by signing this transformative agreement. Students and researchers across the academic and governmental institutions in Qatar will now benefit from access to our online content portfolio for the next three years – connecting them to a broad range of global research – and also enabling them to publish their own research through open access publishing. We hope this partnership will lead to a more promising future as we work to extend the publishing solutions to the full portfolio of Springer Nature,” said Asdaa Kotani, Vice President - Institutional Sales EEMEA&CA at Springer Nature.

Commenting on the agreement on behalf of the Qatar National Library Consortium, Milan Vasiljevic, Manager of Electronic Resource Management and Licensing at the Library, said: “This agreement is a crucial step in achieving our commitment to supporting open access by providing publication opportunities to all researchers in Qatar. This service will complement the fascinating line up of services that the Library offers to researchers and writers from Qatar and beyond wishing to publish their work on open access platforms.”

“We are proud to be the first library outside Europe to formalise such an arrangement to help researchers publish for free in Springer Nature journals and have full access to its content,” added Vasiljevic.
