Groundbreaking projects in crisis support for sexual and gender minorities, disabled health outcomes, and long COVID recognised as winners of the second Inclusive Health Research awards by Nature and Takeda.
London | Cambridge, US | Cape Town, SA, 24 October 2024
The Nature Awards for Inclusive Health Research, in partnership with Takeda, is proud to mark its second year by recognising the following projects for driving inclusivity in health research and seeking to improve health equity across the globe:
- The Dignity Project - Kelsey Chapman, Griffith University, Australia - A project to collect data from citizen scientists with disabilities to design dignified services and systems, enhancing health outcomes and equity. Using a bespoke digital engagement platform, the project uses storytelling to ensure inclusive and impactful research is driven by more than 700 people with lived experience.
- Profiling the Determinants of Long COVID - Mark Faghy, University of Derby, UK - A research project to combine the pathophysiology data with the lived experience of patients being impacted by Long COVID. The research was designed and conducted with patients, for the benefit of the entire Long COVID community.
- RISE Study ("Resist, Intervene, Support, Empower"): Addressing the impact of violence among queer women from Brazil - Monica Malta, University of Toronto, Canada. - An app addressing the high levels of violence and poverty among sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in Brazil by mapping and reporting violence, as well as offering 24/7 crisis support.
The winners were announced following a Nature Forum event on Health Equity hosted by Stellenbosch University at their Tygerberg Campus in Cape Town.
Helena Jensen, Head of Grants & Awards, Springer Nature, commented: “Promoting and championing equity across the research space is central to the ethos of the Nature Awards. Why? Because global equity in life sciences research has a key role in improving the quality, plurality and inclusivity of healthcare outcomes. With this year’s awards, we have once again seen a wealth of inspiring projects, each demonstrating the power inclusivity and collaboration can have on addressing global health needs. Through this award with Takeda, we seek to recognise impactful contributions to advancing health equity globally and send our congratulations to this year’s winners for the outstanding work they are doing.”
The awards and the conference form part of an ongoing programme of activities on health equity delivered through Springer Nature and Takeda’s partnership. Together, Springer Nature and Takeda aim to build awareness of key issues through storytelling, convening thought leaders to identify solutions, and encouraging the adoption of best practices.
