Springer Nature launches new research publishing internship programme

London | New York | Berlin, 6 April 2023

Global education and research publisher, Springer Nature, is launching a new paid internship opportunity for students and recent graduates1. Initially, roles will be available for the Opening Doors scheme in the UK and US, with a second phase planned in India and China.

Successful applicants will gain experience in research and science news publishing in Springer Nature’s journals, books or magazines, contributing to real projects and learning from talented publishing professionals for up to six months.

Many groups and perspectives are currently underrepresented in the publishing industry, a challenge Springer Nature is actively trying to address through an internal DEI programme as well as external facing diversity initiatives designed to make sure the publisher’s education and research content is reflective of the communities they serve. This internship programme has been designed with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and improved representation in mind. Applicants from all backgrounds are welcome, but candidates from historically underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.2

The internship will offer training and career development, and an assigned buddy from one of the organisation’s employee networks, who have played a central role in the creation of this programme. During their placement, interns will also have a chance to learn more about Springer Nature’s recruitment processes and other business areas at Springer Nature.

Jessica Gedamu, VP Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Springer Nature said:

“We have a lot to offer here at Springer Nature - collaborative teams, passionate colleagues and exciting projects - but central to our success as a business is DEI. It is our hope that this initiative will kick-start a fantastic career in research publishing for the successful candidates, who will form part of the next generation shaping our industry.”

Harsh Jegadeesan, Chief Publishing Officer at Springer Nature said:

“DEI is vital to our business mission: to publish research that is useful and usable by all, to improve and enrich our lives and the planet. To do so, we must fully represent the society we work in and with. This internship programme opens the doors to our industry and organisation, to invest in a diverse talent pipeline for the future and a workforce we need to reflect the global community we are a part of.”
