Publishing for the Sustainable Development Goals

Speakers:
Prof. Dr. Estelle Herlyn, Professor of Business Administration at FOM University, Düsseldorf
Andrea Powell, Director of Outreach and Publisher Coordinator for Research4Life, STM
Moderator:
Thea Sherer, Director of Group Communications, Springer Nature

How can publishers and their authors do more to support sustainable development?

In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. The SDGs provide a framework for business and society to work together and solve the world’s biggest challenges. With just over 10 years left to achieve the Goals, how can the publishing community and the authors we work with do more to ensure evidence-based research has an impact on the policymakers and practitioners who need it to help deliver progress?

Academic and Business Information Stage, Hall 4.2

What’s going on in the world of open access book publishing?

Presenter: Ros Pyne, Director, Open Access Books, Springer Nature

Current developments  and an outlook to the future of OA books at Springer Nature

With an open access books programme dating back to 2012, Springer Nature is one of the leading OA book publishers. The latest results of a survey conducted by Springer Nature show a largely positive perception of OA books among both OA and non-OA book authors. What are the key motivations for authors to choose open access? What are the remaining hurdles? And what role do funders play? In this talk, Ros Pyne gives an overview of the latest developments in the realm of open access books and introduces the Springer and Palgrave Macmillan OA book programmes. She also provides an insight into upcoming trends and initiatives.

Read and Publish deals: How to achieve a transformative deal and what to look out for along the way

Presenter: Dagmar Laging, Vice President Institutional Sales Europe, Springer Nature
Moderator: Susie Winter, Director of External Communications & Engagement, Springer Nature

Dagmar Laging will share what goes on behind the scenes to make these deals work

Read and Publish deals are hugely important in enabling, at scale, the transition to open access (OA).  Springer Nature has been supporting transformative deals since 2014 and with new agreements reached this year with Norway and Projekt DEAL in Germany, now has over 10 in place.  However, the stark fact is that agreeing such deals is complex for numerous reasons and can be particularly difficult for smaller publishers. Join a conversation with Dagmar Laging, VP Institutional Sales Springer Nature, who has been at the forefront of negotiating these deals where she will share her experience into what works, what doesn’t, what’s important, what to watch out for, and importantly, what she has learnt over the years and how this helps shape Springer Nature’s approach going forward.

From Springer Nature's Beta Writer to Cenveo's Smart Edit for workflow automation and high-speed publishing, to companies that use machine learning and AI for discovery, peer review, and more, emerging technologies allow publishers to offer a broader range of tools and services to serve researchers and authors.

In this presentation and panel, we will shed light on upcoming technologies and share current examples and initiatives from Springer Nature, Cenveo Publisher Services, HighWire.
