BioMed Central to publish Marine Biodiversity Records as an open access journal

London, 4 November 2015

From January 2016, Marine Biodiversity Records, a journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, will be published by BioMed Central. The re-launched open access journal is now accepting submissions.

Marine Biodiversity Records is a peer-reviewed, online publication with a focus on the rapidly changing marine and coastal environment. The journal will publish original research articles which record and review behavioural and geographical changes in marine organisms, including effects of the introduction of novel or alien species to marine ecosystems, and new records of species in previously undocumented areas. The journal was formerly published by Cambridge University Press as a subscription journal with an open access option.

Caroline Black, Editorial Director at BioMed Central, said: “Marine biodiversity is an increasingly important challenge for global populations as the climate, and marine habitats change. For this reason, it is vital that marine biodiversity research is published via an open access model, and can be accessed and shared easily by those working in the field, as well as researchers.

“We are delighted to publish Marine Biodiversity Records on behalf of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, the world’s oldest and leading Association dedicated to the promotion of marine biological research.”

Dr Nova Mieszkowska, who recently joined Marine Biodiversity Records as its new Editor-in-Chief said: “Detecting, tracking and forecasting species responses to our changing environment and anthropogenic pressures is a global, interdisciplinary endeavour that has been a driving focus of my research throughout my career. Marine Biodiversity Records promotes world-leading research, maximising impact via open access to advance our understanding of marine biodiversity in our modern world. I look forward to promoting the highest quality scientific research to a global audience at MBR.”

Dr Matt Frost, Deputy Director (Policy and Knowledge Exchange) for The Marine Biological Association said: “With numerous international collaborations and members in 44 countries, the MBA sees the promotion and dissemination of excellent research as part of its core remit to support the global marine biological community. We are also excited about working with a world-leader in open-access publishing to ensure rapid access to important findings.”

The new journal submission site is available here and is now open for submissions.
