Springer Nature has deposited more than six hundred thousand chemical compounds on PubChem, all of them offering more than 26 million links back into the primary literature, eBooks or Major Reference Works located on SpringerLink, BMC or nature.com. Of these, 1.6 million links point to open or free access documents. Documents from all chemistry and life sciences-related disciplines were automatically annotated using InfoChem's chemical named entity recognition technology.

This newly created Management Board level appointment has been established to support the future growth and strategy of the group. Frank will report in the short term to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Derk Haank and then from October 1st, he will report to the new CEO of Springer Nature, Daniel Ropers.

The Nature Index 2017 China supplement, published today, reveals that as China’s total number of articles included in the Nature Index increased since 2012, the percentage of articles with international co-authors has continued to rise year-on-year. By 2016, papers with international co-authors comprised more than 50% of the country’s articles in the index.

BMC Biology has become the first dedicated biology journal to accept Registered Reports. This innovative approach to publishing allows authors to submit their rationale and methods for peer-review before any experiments are conducted. Articles that pass peer-review will be accepted in principle meaning that, as long as the study is completed in accordance with the pre-registered methodology, the article will be published following a second round of peer-review.

A new report issued by BioMed Central and Digital Science concludes that in order to affect real, industry-wide improvements to the peer review process, publishers, researchers, funders and institutions need to be willing to experiment with different models, encourage more diversity in the reviewer pool, utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) and support training and mentoring for peer reviewers.

Springer Nature today announces two new initiatives in support of ORCID, which gives researchers a unique, personal, persistent identifier (an iD) that distinguishes them from every other researcher.
