Springer Nature partners with FCT NOVA, Lisbon and the European Materials Research Society to publish npj 2D Materials and Applications

Springer Nature today announces npj 2D Materials and Applications, a new open access journal to be published in partnership with the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT NOVA) and supported by the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS).
With the new journal, all parties aim to create a top-tier interdisciplinary platform for scientists to share and promote 2D materials research and applications. The announcement of the new journal and partnership has been timed to coincide with the 2016 E-MRS Spring Meeting and Exhibit, being held in Lille, France from May 2nd to 6th.
Martin Delahunty, Global Director of Nature Partner Journals, Springer Nature, said: “Materials science is not yet well served by high quality, high impact open access publications. npj 2D Materials and Applications will meet that need, with broad coverage of research in 2D materials — materials consisting of a single layer of atoms — and nanostructures formed of these materials.”
Fernando Santana , Dean of FCT NOVA, said: “This year the Materials Science Department of FCT NOVA celebrates its 40th anniversary. We are delighted to bring these 40 years of experience in microelectronics, advanced functional materials, material science and engineering to publishing npj 2D Materials and Applications in partnership with Springer Nature.”
Luisa Torsi , President of the E-MRS, said: “2D materials research has seen both a growth in profile and funding since the isolation of graphene in 2004, and this rapid development has led to the discovery of a range of 2D materials. A growing amount of research is being conducted to find new applications for these materials, from intelligent interactive surfaces with outstanding electronic and optical properties, to building new types of multifunctional devices and systems. E-RMS is delighted to be working with FCT Nova and Springer Nature to develop a high quality new journal that will publish the most important scientific advances in these areas.”
In terms of policy making and impact, the journal responds to the pressing requirements of translating robust research based on this new class of materials into systems and devices that deliver sustainable solution for a wide range of applications.
npj 2D Materials and Applications will publish original papers, review articles and short communications to reflect the latest breakthrough and developments taking place in all aspects 2D materials, including allotropes (different structures of the same element) and compounds, ultralight composite materials, their properties (including mechanical properties), and their isolation, synthesis and manufacturing. The journal will also publish research relating to the use of 2D materials in applications such as photovoltaics, optoelectronics and photonics, semiconductors, sensors, electrodes, water purification/filtration/distillation, and energy storage.

The Faculty of Sciences and Technology/Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, (FCT NOVA), Campus of Caparica, is one of the most prestigious Portuguese engineering and science public schools (500 faculties and 200 non-academic staff) enrolling 8000 students (80% MSc and PhD). Founded in Strasbourg in 1983 and legalized in 1985, the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) has become the largest conference organizer in Europe in the field of advanced functional materials. E-MRS has several thousand members from industry, government, academia and research laboratories, which meet regularly to debate recent technological developments during two large conferences in Spring (France) and Fall (Poland) with a total number of papers exceeding 3.500. The major society conference, the annual E-MRS Spring Meeting, is held in May or June and offers an average of 25 topical symposia. It is widely recognized as being of the highest international significance and is the greatest of its kind in Europe. In addition, a significant number of workshops towards scientists, policy makers, industrial and the general public, as well as and educational activities (e.g. Summer schools, tutorials) are organized by the society.
