Springer Nature creates new scholarship for librarians to honor Cynthia Hurd
New York, 17 May 2016
Springer Nature is proud to honor the legacy of Cynthia Hurd, a dedicated librarian, whose career spanned more than 31 years in Charleston public and academic libraries, including the St. Andrews Regional Library and the College of Charleston. On June 17, 2015, Cynthia Hurd was killed along with 8 other people at the historic Emanuel AME Church. The Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship for attendance to the Charleston Library Conference provides $1,500 to a librarian who has demonstrated an active interest in the profession, but has not had an opportunity to attend the annual gathering of librarians due to lack of institutional funding. The scholarship is to be applied to the costs of registration, travel, accommodations and meals.
Maura Diamond, Executive Licensing Manager at Springer Nature, said “Cynthia’s meaningful efforts had a positive impact on the many people she encountered. The new annual Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship is a way in which Springer Nature can help honor her commitment to service and support the library community.”
Applicants will be required to detail a project or initiative developed at their library to help enhance diversity in the selection of resources or provide services to support the research and learning needs of all segments of the academic community. For more information about applying for this new scholarship, librarians should visit springer.com/hurdmemorialscholarship.
Submission deadline for the Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship is Friday, September 2nd, 2016. The scholarship winner will be notified by email before the end of September 2016.
