New award to support women working in materials and nanoscience
London, 14 December 2018
Springer Nature and NanoSMAT have launched an award to recognize early career women scientists working in materials and nansocience. The NanoSMAT Woman in Science Award, sponsored by Springer Nature, recognizes exemplary women working in the field of materials and nanotechnology science. The two organisations hope that this award will increase the visibility and recognition of women in this field of science.
The inaugural award was presented to Professor Zahra Nazanin Jamshidi, Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry and Department Director of Supervision and Evaluation at Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Research Centre of Iran (CCERCI).
Professor Jamshidi holds a PhD from Shiraz University, Iran and has spent time as a visiting scientist at the University of Alberta and the University of Basel. Her research interests include Optical and Electronic Structure Properties of Metal Clusters; Excited State Properties of Metal Dimers based on Multi-reference and Relativistic Calculations; Resonance Raman Intensities of Transition Metal Cluster Complexes; and Analysis of the Nature of Metal Cluster Interactions.
The award will grant Professor Jamshidi one-year access to two premier Springer Nature databases: SpringerMaterials and Nano. These databases help researchers to discover critically evaluated materials and nano-related literature and data quickly and efficiently. During this time, Professor Jamshidi will also have access to Springer Nature Product Manager experts who are working in the materials science and nanotechnology fields.
Michael Klinge, Director Product Management, SpringerMaterials, said: “At Springer Nature we are committed to driving innovation, to help researchers, students, faculty, and professionals alike to achieve more and to discover more. We are delighted to be sponsoring this award and to be part of the journey to support and encourage women in Africa and across the globe to pursue their scientific passions fully. We are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize Professor Jamshidi for her leadership and commitment to advancing research in the field.”
The award was conceived with advice and support from Professor Malik Maaza, UNESCO Africa Chair in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, iThemba Labs, UNISA and NRF.
