Springer Nature's NYC office was honored by Oceanic Global for its commitment to sustainability
New York, 5 December 2019
Springer Nature - publisher of Scientific American and Nature Research - has been recognised for efforts being made to reduce its environmental impacts. Oceanic Global, has recently awarded Springer Nature its Ocean Champion award, which recognises the company’s commitment to adopting a holistic approach to sustainable operating practices, with a strong focus on eliminating single-use plastics.
An employee-run Green Office Network was created in 2018 to encourage environmental responsibility and action at Springer Nature’s offices worldwide. The Green Office Network is a key part of Springer Nature’s responsible business strategy to reduce its environmental footprint, promote an inclusive environment rich in diversity, and to forge links with the communities it serves. In the New York City office, at One New York Plaza, changes made have included the elimination of certain single-use plastic items, and the introduction of new recycling programmes. The NYC Green Office Network has more in store for 2020.
Myrtle Bannis, Head of US General Affairs, and John Vallecillo, Deputy Head of US General Affairs, said, “Springer Nature is honored to receive the Ocean Champion Badge from Oceanic Global. This is a testament to our commitment to sustainability. We look forward to working with our colleagues around the world to continue to reduce the environmental footprint of our operations."
Lea d'Auriol, Founder & Executive Director of Oceanic Global, said: “We are thrilled to award Springer Nature with the Ocean Champion badge of The Oceanic Standard for their demonstrated commitment to environmental health and promoting a healthy workplace and office culture. They have eliminated unnecessary single-use plastic items including cups, cutlery and dishware, switched to recycled paper-based shipping envelopes, and are collecting coffee pods to be recycled by TerraCycle.”
In addition, as part of its responsible business strategy Springer Nature has established a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Program to connect the researchers who are tackling the world’s toughest challenges with the practitioners in policy and business who desperately need those insights to achieve their goals in improving the world, by making its publishing activities more visible to its key communities through a variety of channels.
