Partnership with Pistoia Alliance opens up knowledge sharing within the life science
Springer Nature joins the Pistoia Alliance to collaborate with the wider life science community to advance discovery and research solutions
London | 16th September 2021
As part of its commitment to developing innovative solutions to support research and researcher needs, Springer Nature has joined the Pistoia Alliance, a global initiative to drive forward best practices, standards and technology in the life sciences.
The Pistoia Alliance was formed by global pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis and AstraZeneca with the purpose of helping researchers overcome common obstacles to innovation whether this is identifying the root causes of inefficiencies, working with regulators to adopt new standards, or helping researchers implement AI effectively.
The partnership will see Springer Nature work collaboratively with Pistoia and its members, sharing knowledge and contributing to Pistoia’s community projects to better address the practical needs of researchers within these critical fields. Speaking of the new partnership Harald Wirsching, Managing Director Data and Analytics, Springer Nature Commented:
“At our heart is the commitment to supporting the evolving needs of our community, working closely with partners to address challenges and develop solutions that best support research practice and the advancement of discovery and knowledge. Joining the Pistoia Alliance presents us with a range of new opportunities to do this for researchers in the life sciences. Springer Nature will be actively involved in many of Pistoia’s unique projects around solutions and standards. This will in turn provide us with new insights so that we can deliver greater value back to the vital research and work of the life science community”
Steve Arlington, President of the Pistoia Alliance, said:
“I am delighted to welcome Springer Nature to the Pistoia Alliance. The Pistoia Alliance brings together many organizations from a broad range of disciplines who work together to innovate across the whole of the healthcare ecosystem and seek to solve problems they cannot tackle alone. By fostering an environment where we can pool our knowledge and work together on difficult problems and solve them, we feel we are making good progress in many of our projects. We look forward to working with and taking advantage of Springer Nature’s high quality research, expertise and approach to research solutions in this space, to further enhance the breadth and depth of our capabilities as member organisation.”

The Pistoia Alliance is a global, not-for-profit members’ organisation conceived in 2007 and incorporated in 2009 by representatives of AstraZeneca, GSK, Novartis and Pfizer who met at a conference in Pistoia, Italy. This group shared the opinion that life science R&D was changing beyond recognition, and that organizations could not afford to ‘go it alone’ in order to integrate emerging technologies and continue to deliver life-changing therapies to patients. The Pistoia Alliance’s projects help to overcome common obstacles to innovation and to transform R&D – whether identifying the root causes of inefficiencies, working with regulators to adopt new standards, or helping researchers implement AI effectively. There are currently more than 100 member companies – ranging from global organisations, to medium enterprises, to start-ups, to individuals – collaborating as equals on projects that generate value for the worldwide life sciences community.
